But then as we were talking about the benefits of raising different types of animals, it occured to me. Animals of any kind should be kept around as fallback in the case of a food shortage. So once you get really desperate when there's no food left and you've already eaten your pet/animal, you can then resort to cannibalism. Cause obviously you're not going to start eating yourself or another person (unless you start hallucinating about how their ass would look with a side of parisien potatoes)! So in essence I think its a good idea to have an animal.
One possible exception to the rule would be the following:

I'd probably find it hard to eat this poor thing at first. Mostly because it looks pathetic enough. Look at the old man styles, his ass is more wrinkly then an 80 yr old man and the its only 6 months old. He looks all lonely and emo and just wants to be loved cause even though he's ugly on the outside, on the inside he's hurting. *cry* But if it came to eating my foot versus eating him. I'd eat him.

animals are food, but your pet is family... besides, keep some non perisable food items around if you're paranoid of a famine! ;)
